Monday 2nd March 2009

Left Te Anau in sunshine – anything is better than yesterday – 190kms to Queenstown. Had to retrace some of our steps driving back along Lake Wakatipu – shrouded in cloud two days ago, but this time in the sun, we saw it in all its splendour.

We arrived at our next Motel at lunchtime – The Alexis Motor Lodge – to find a large room waiting for us with view of the lake to the front and the Skyline Gondola at the back. The mountains at the front are called The Remarkables and that’s just what they are.

Went to explore the town and had lunch at Pier 19 – could have sat there for hours – steak sandwich and fries and a cool glass (or two) of chardonnay, but the waitress insisted on bringing us our bill and sending us on our way. Back at the motel, we watched the changing light over the mountains and the lake as the sun set.

Could our luck be holding – another bright sunny day. We took ourselves on a circular trip around the outskirts of Queenstown climbing 3,500ft to the Coronet Peak Ski Area.

Then onto Arrowtown a historic goldmining town. Very pretty old houses – just a pity that it was full of tourists!!

Tonight we are having dinner at 8.15 in the restaurant at the top of the Skyline Gondola over Arthur’s Point. Hopefully we will get some good sunset photos.

Super pictures - glad you have had some sunshine. We had a meal there in an old mining tavern tucked away in a corner of Arrowtown then had a walk round the curio shops.
